Mid Summer Boating - Your Upkeep is crucial
Posted on: Jun 18
Mid-summer boating means peak hours on the water, but it also brings heavy wear and tear to your vessel. To prevent unexpected breakdowns and costly engine strain during prime season, you must regularly monitor key components. Here are five crucial points you need to inspect right now.

1. Sterndrive Gear Lube
Your lower unit works incredibly hard during the busy summer months. Mid-season is the perfect time to check your Gear Lube Level and Condition.
  • The Check: Remove the upper plug and inspect the fluid. It should be a clean, translucent bluish-green.
  • Warning Signs: If the oil looks milky or grayish, it’s a strong indicator that water is bypassing your seals. Top off the fluid as recommended by your manufacturer, and be sure to have the lower unit’s seals inspected if water contamination is present.
2. Hydraulic Fluid
Smooth steering is vital for safe navigation, especially in busy waterways.
  • The Check: Check your helm's hydraulic steering fluid reservoir.
  • The Action: Inspect the hydraulic rams and hoses for any signs of weeping, leaks, or a "spongy" helm feel. Wipe the ram shaft dry, cycle the steering wheel from side to side, and check the shaft again. If fluid is present, it means your seals need immediate attention to avoid total steering failure.
3. Belt Tension
Summer heat and high RPMs put continuous demand on your engine's drive belts.
  • The Check: Press your thumb firmly against the longest span of the alternator, power steering, or raw water pump belts.
  • The Action: You should not have more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of slack. Tighten the belts if they are loose to prevent slipping, and check them thoroughly for any signs of cracking, fraying, or dry rot.
4. Fuel-Water Separators
Water in your fuel tank is the #1 cause of mid-season engine failure, often caused by heavy summer humidity or contaminated marina fuel.
  • The Check: If your vessel is equipped with a spin-on fuel-water separator, locate it and drain a small amount of fuel from the bottom valve into a clear container.
  • The Action: Look for any water beads or dark sediment. If you spot water or haven't replaced the filter in a while, it's time to Swap Your Fuel Filters to keep your engine running smoothly and preserve your injectors.
5. Propeller & Shaft
Out of sight shouldn't mean out of mind. Hitting sandbars or submerged debris causes unseen damage that silently strains your motor.
  • The Check: Inspect your prop blades for any nicks, bends, or rolling.
  • The Action: Remove the prop and carefully check the shaft for straightness and any tangled fishing line, which can easily ruin your shaft seals. A perfectly balanced propeller ensures better fuel efficiency and prevents vibration-related wear on your outdrive.
